The primary educational activity of the Department of Clinical Nutrition is the Coordinated Program in Clinical Dietetics and Certificate Track in the Coordinated Program in Clinical Dietetics. This program is directed by Bernadette Latson, R.D., M.S. All of the Clinical Nutrition faculty with primary appointments in the department and many of those with secondary appointments participate in the instruction of courses. This program awards a bachelor's degree in clinical dietetics and prepares graduates to sit for the national registration examination for dietitians.
Major strengths of the Coordinated Program and the Certificate Track are the outstanding quality of its faculty of clinical dietetics, the faculty of associated nutrition programs, and UT Southwestern's affiliation with major teaching hospitals:
- Zale Lipshy University Hospital
- St. Paul Medical Center
- Parkland Health and Hospital System
- Childrens Medical Center of Dallas
- Veteran Administration Medical Center at Dallas
The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetics Education. Graduates of this program represent a large proportion of all registered dietitians in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Career opportunities for registered dietitians are bountiful.
