Project1

Project title: Efficacy of airbag in preventing serious injuries: Attitudes among ED patients

Brief Description of Project: This study examines the attitudes and knowledge of air bag effectiveness in preventing serious injuries in patients presenting to the Emergency Department. In order to reduce the incidence of injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes, a method for detecting risk taking behavior and its influence on the occurrence of motor vehicle trauma will also be developed.

Medical students will be mentored to administer structured interviews. During this study, students will also be learning the basic principles of Injury Prevention. The student will assist with the injury prevention data collection and will have several opportunities for clinical experiences as available. Once the data is gathered it will be entered into a database and analyzed.

Human subjects IRB approved project number: N/A

Project Type:            Patient-Based Research

This study will attempt to determine whether the alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of crashes fatal to teenage drivers. Medical students will be trained in database operation. They will learn data managing, data transformation, data cleaning and data analysis.

Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students: Taught basic research skills to one medical student last summer.
