Project title: Analysis of Pediatric Elbow Fractures - A Possible Preventable Injury

Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): N/A

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): N/A

Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects) Patient-Based

Brief Description of Project:

Pediatric Elbow Fractures requiring surgical reduction and pinning are frequent in number and a significant cost to the health care system. Preliminary analysis suggests that a number of these injuries are sustained while children are unsupervised and playing on heights or jumping on furniture. This study will review all supracondylar fractures seen from 1990-2000 for circumstances of injury, the data compiled and presented.

Project title: The Effect of TGF-Beta, BMP, and basic FGF on rodent marrow cells in culture

Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): N/A

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): N/A

Project Type basic research

Brief Description of Project: Bone Marrow Aspirates are being considered in clinical practice as a means of delivering progenitor cells to bony defects. The present research question is whether the efficacy of the marrow cells can be enhanced by the addition of growth factors. For this study, femurs are obtained from rodents being sacrificed for other non-marrow toxic studies. Using previously described techniques, the marrow is flushed from the femurs, isolated and plated under sterile techniques. After confluence, one of these factors (TGF Beta, BMP, basic FGF) will be added to the medium and effects analyzed by collagen and GAGS content using PCR + Immunofluorescence.

Project Title - Outcome Study of Isolated Ankle Fracture

Patient Based Research

Brief Description:

All patients over the age of 18 years who are treated for ankle fractures on the UTSW campus will be entered into the study. Patient care is nondirected by the study and uninterrupted. Patients are identified at follow up visit. Only routine radiographs will be reviewed. Patients will be examined at their last clinic visit using the AOFAS (American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society) clinical scoring system - results will be collected and published.
