Project title: Cinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Low Birth Weight Infants< 1500g with Necrotizing Enterocolitis Requiring Laparotomy vs Those Treated Medically

Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): NA

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): NA

Project Type Patient-based research.

Brief Description of Project: This is a retrospective analysis for the characteristics of low birth weight infants with history of definite necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) who required laparotomy vs those who did not. In a preliminary analysis using records from our neonatal database for infants born between 01/01/1988 and 12/31/98, we identified 128 infants with history of NEC , 73 of them required laparotomy, and 55 required only supportive medical therapy. The spectrum of neonatal diseases was different among both groups but our database lacks markers for disease severity, or for known predictors of NEC (Indocin doses, time of infection, history of hypotension…).

The project will require

1) preparing a spreadsheet for data collection using Access software to collect data on the predictors of NEC

2) Review the above infants Charts' for pre-defined predictors of disease severity and NEC

3) Perform statistical analysis on the collected data

All the above steps will be performed under the supervision of the project mentor.
