Project title: Detecting drug and alcohol related problems in a family practice setting.
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): pending
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):
Project Type patient-based
Brief Description of Project:
A recent national survey of primary care physicians found that 92% of primary care physicians failed to recognize symptoms of early alcohol abuse when presented with a case scenario. This project will examine how often drug and alcohol related problems are detected in the Parkland Family Practice Clinic.
After giving consent, patients waiting in exam rooms will be screened for drug and alcohol problems using standardized instruments (AUDIT, CAGE-AID, DAST). Patients who screen positive will have their charts reviewed after their physician's visit. 2 questions will be asked:
1. Does the medical record reflect the patient is at risk for a drug or alcohol related problem?
2. Was the problem addressed in the clinic visit?
