Project title: Assessing the Accuracy of Home Glucose Monitoring

Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): Pending

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): N/A

Project Type: Patient-based research

Brief Description of Project:

The student will observe and evaluate the patient's technique in obtaining blood glucose values. The patient's test results will be simultaneously compared to results obtained on a reference laboratory monitor using the same finger stick. The student will provide patient education about home blood glucose testing if needed. Patients and providers will be polled to determine if they use home glucose test results to make treatment decisions.

Supervision: The student is assigned to a nurse practitioner mentor and will also work closely on the project with faculty who are experienced in research methods and writing.

Work Setting/Hours: Family practice clinic/academic office of UT Southwestern. 40 hours per week.

Goal of Project: To evaluate the accuracy of blood glucose testing obtained by patients with diabetes who use home blood glucose monitors and to determine if patients and/or physician providers make treatment decisions based on the patient's report of home glucose values.

Project Outcomes: 1. The participating student will present the research findings at a meeting attended by department faculty and residents.

2. The student will be a co-author on an abstract submitted for presentation at a state or national meeting regarding the research project.
