Brief Description of Project

The Southwestern Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery (SCMIS) has as its core mission research, education and training, and evaluation of new technology. A summer student would be involved in all aspects of the program and specifically take on one or two key projects depending on their interests and background. Current activities within SCMIS include education research training residents on laparoscopic common bile duct exploration using inanimate models. In the animal lab, we will be pursuing use of various sealants to reinforce laparoscopic cholecystojejunostomy and gastrojejunostomy. Clinically, we are beginning a project comparing laparoscopic ventral hernia repair to open ventral hernia repair. In collaboration with the Center for Surgical Weight Loss, we also have ongoing patient based and basic research projects related to obesity.

Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students:

Previous research activities: We have had three UT Southwestern students (Brian Miller, William Young, Rishi Tenaja) rotate through the SCMIS during summers. All have presented and published.
