Project Title: Evaluation of the Factors That Influence Minority and Underprivileged
Populations' Entrance Into Breast Cancer and High Risk Clinical Trials As Compared
to the Private Sector
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): 0702-374
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): N/A
Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects)
Patient-based research
Brief Description of Project:
By observation, there seems to be differences in the accrual of public and private breast cancer patients into surgical clinical trials. Would like to evaluate this and substantiate the accuracy or inaccuracy of this observation.
There are current surgical clinical trials ongoing that are specific to breast cancer patients. Any patient who is a surgical candidate and who meets trial criteria is offered entrance into the clinical trial. This proposed study is designed to collect data from public and private breast cancer patients as related to the factors and/or differences, if any, in their accrual into these studies.
Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students:
The Center for Breast Care hosted five students in the Summer Research Program in the summer of 2002. Abstracts were completed on the projects and one won second place in the poster division at the Annual Summer Students Research Forum.
