Project title: A Randomized, Double-blinded, Active Controlled, Parallel Study
to Evaluate the Clinical Strategy for Reducing Propofol Pain on Injection for
Patients Requiring General Anesthesia
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): 022004-014
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):
Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects): Patient-based
Brief Description of Project: Propofol is the most widely used drug for IV induction of anesthesia, but patients commonly report pain on injection. A new formulation of propofol, not yet approved by the FDA, with 50% less lipid is being evaluated to demonstrate safety and efficacy. Our hypothesis states that patients may have less pain associated with injection with the new formulation. 160 patients scheduled for elective general anesthesia will be enrolled after informed consent. A student working on this project will help enroll patients and collect data during induction of anesthesia by assessing pain on injection and follow patients through their perioperative period. The student will also gain experience with data analysis and writing up the project.
