Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): 0976-03-03-1

Animal-based research.
Brief Description of Project:
Evaluation of heat shock proteins following laser induced injury. A rodent model system will be treated with various lasers to determine if the heat shock protein 70i (thermal inducible) is up-regulated in the presence of these treatments. The student will assist in all aspects of animal care, sample collections and histological examinations. Our preliminary data have proven that this intracellular protein is expressed after a 1319 nm laser treatment.
From a clinical standpoint, the student may help with a recently approved human lidocaine study. This will only be undertaken when the animal laser study is completed.
Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students:
Two students have been mentored in the last two years.
