Project title: Effect of Hormone Replacement Therapy on the Tear Film Lipid Layer.
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): IRB # 0303-196
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): 0
Project Type patient-based research.
Brief Description of Project: Determination of the effects of hormone replacement therapy on meibomian gland lipids is the primary focus of this dry eye related research. The summer student will, with the guidance of regular faculty, select patients, aid in consenting patients and will take part in clinically related experimental procedures. In addition the summer student will take part in laboratory procedures which are part of data collection procedures. It is expected that this student will become familiar or proficient in these procedures and understand how they relate to the overall clinical research project.
Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students: Laura Mendiola,
a 2003 summer student took part in discussions with the project geneticist,
consenting procedures for patients as well as familiarization with clinical
and laboratory procedures related to the project (project: Inborn Errors of
Metabolism - Children's Eyelid Lipids).
