Project title: Emergency Provider Willingness to Respond to Disasters, Threats
of Terrorism, and Weapons of Mass Effect
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):
#1202-722
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):
Project Type (patient-based) research:
In the wake of 9/11 and national anthrax scares, professional obligations and the duty of care in national disaster preparedness are ill defined.
Brief Description of Project:
This HRSA funded project will measure the willingness of health-care providers to respond to bioterrorism events and public health emergencies at baseline and then again after exposure to an interactive, AMA-supplied, Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS) course. This pre-post, quasi-experimental design will allow us to measure baseline ethical understanding of the duty to treat and the impact of exposure to BDLS on this baseline willingness. Student researchers will participate in all phases of the project, including pre/post tests, data processing, structured literature review, data analysis, abstract writing, manuscript preparation and dissemination of the results. Student researchers will be exposed to the curriculum and will help follow-up participants to determine willingness to respond and volunteer for a Medical Reserve Corps. Authorship on abstracts and manuscripts is expected.
