Brief Description of Project: Plasma levels of cholesterol are directly related to the dietary content of cholesterol and to the fractional absorption of dietary cholesterol. The fractional absorption of cholesterol varies over a wide range and is directly related to the plasma levels of campesterol, as major plant sterol. We measured the plasma levels of campesterol in the Dallas Heart Study and will be examining the genetic factors that contribute to the inter-individual differences in plasma campesterol levels by performing genetic association studies and linkage studies with a goal of pinpointing the genetic variations contributing to differences in cholesterol absorption.
