Project title: "Trazodone and Insomnia in Substance-Dependent Patients"
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): pending exempt review
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): N/A
Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects) patient-based research
Brief Description of Project: We have collected data, de-identified, on patients admitting to NEXUS Recovery Center (for women with addictions) 11/03 through 4/04. We will be analyzing the data to look at the possible contribution(s) of Trazodone (a very common sedative-hypnotic agent) in increasing substance abuse treatment retention and/or minimizing premature treatment termination in women seeking residential treatment for substance dependence.
Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students:
Submitted K-23 application, "A Pilot Trial of Topiramate in Methamphetamine-Dependent
Patients" October 1, 2004 to NIDA-currently pending review.
Submitting R-01 with M. Trivedi, M.D. "Treatment of Depression with Medication Algorithm in Substance Dependent Women" 2/1/05 submission date to NIDA
Have not worked with UTSW Medical Students independently have worked with summer research students through Dr. Sherwood Brown's research group, where I work part-time as research physician for his Psychoneuroendocrine Research and am collaborating on his Dual Diagnosis Pharmacotherapy trials.
Students will have the opportunity to interact with patients and staff at NEXUS
Recovery Center and will have many learning opportunities regarding current
medical and behavioural substance abuse treatments, as well as, exposure to
the many medical, psychiatric and psychosocial aspects and complications of
addiction.
