Project title:

Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): HRT impact on preocular tear film components

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):

Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects)

Brief Description of Project:

This is an IRB approved, NIH funded research project assessing the impact of hormone replacement therapy in woman or major hormonal changes in men on the various components of the preocular tear film, i.e., aqueous as well as lipid layers. Patients will be assessed prior to and after either initiation of or discontinuation of HRT or other hormonal interventions. Aqueous tears will be assessed using Fluorophotometry. The lipid layer of the tear film will be assessed using evaporometry as well as lipid biochemical determinations at the bench.
