Brief Description of Project:
In August 2002, the Dallas Stroke Council initiated an acute stroke triage system
with the Dallas Fire Department. Since that time, almost 900 patients have been
triaged to one of three stroke receiving hospitals in Dallas. The student as
an integral member of the acute stroke team at UTSW will, in collaboration with
Ray Fowler, MD in Emergency Medicine, compile the outcomes of the triaged patients
and the effectiveness of the Dallas Stroke Scale in diagnosis of acute stroke.
Data will be obtained from patients admitted to Parkland, Baylor, and Presbyterian
Hospitals. The student will be trained and certified in the NIH Stroke Scale
and Barthel Index of Disability.
