Project title: A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled dose-ranging study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of oral pregabalin (Lyrica®) for preanesthetic medication in patients undergoing elective surgery procedures

Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): 122005-016

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): N/A

Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects): Patient-based research

Brief Description of Project:

The primary objective of this randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled study is to evaluate the preoperative anxiolytic and postoperative pain-relieving effects of oral pregabalin (Lyrica®), a novel sedative-analgesic, when administered for premedication of patients undergoing elective surgery procedures. We hypothesize that patients receiving preoperative oral pregabalin (vs placebo) will be less anxious before surgery and experience less postoperative pain in the recovery room. The secondary objectives of this study will be to examine if premedication with pregabalin contributes to an improved quality of recovery, earlier discharge home, and more rapid resumption of normal activities of daily living after surgery.

The proposed study is a randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled dose-ranging study evaluating three different doses of oral pregabalin (150, 300 and 600 mg vs placebo) when administered for premedication of 120 patients (n=30 per group) undergoing elective surgery.
