Project title: Biochemical studies of pyrimidine metabolism in Trypanosoma brucei.
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): none
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): none
Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects) basic research
Brief Description of Project:
Jason Martin's project will be to study the pyrimidine pathway in the parasitic protozoal Trypanosoma brucei by generating RNAi knockdown lines of enzymes in both the biosynthetic and salvage pathways. He will study the effects of RNA knockdown on cell growth, and on the metabolic pools of the pathway to determine if any of the enzymes in the pathway are potential drug targets against the parasite.
Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students:
I have had three MD/PhD students do their thesis research in my lab.
David Myers, Jared Abbott and Tracy Clyne Beswick. I have had a number of additional
MSTP's rotate through my lab.
