Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):

Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects)

Patient-based research

Brief Description of Project:

We are developing an incentive-based program aimed at improving health and wellness behavior in the medically underserved population. The pilot study of the program will begin by targeting obesity in a lower income segment of the Dallas population by offering rewards (e.g. vouchers and free services provided by local businesses) for positive changes in nutrition and fitness habits, such as weight loss and lower of cholesterol. The goal is to then expand to include other areas of health behavior, such as encouraging patients to quit smoking, get vaccinations, etc and to develop an effective program model that could become exportable to other medical and public health institutions.
