Brief Description of Project: "Determinants of Glomerular Filtration Rates in the Elderly"

Chronic kidney disease is common in the elderly and is associated with a high risk of adverse medical events, kidney failure, cardiovascular disease and death. The disorder is usually indicated by a glomerular filtration rate, GFR, of less than 60 ml. Direct measurement of GFR is costly and time-consuming. Thus, in most clinical settings it is estimated using creatinine-based equations. Very few studies, however, have validated the use of these formulas in the very old or chronically ill elderly. This study proposes to compare various methods of estimating glomerular filtration rates in an indigent older population with multiple co-morbidities and determinants of renal function. Data will be collected through chart and EMR review.
