Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): IRB# 122006-058

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):

Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects) Patient-based research to be conducted jointly by Hand and Psychology service. Anticipate minimal direct patient involvement but assistance with data entry and background work

Brief Description of Project:

Late teen and adult patients to be reviewed for persistence of physical limitations and assessment of psychosocial adjustment to brachial plexus palsy.

The questions that we are asking are: what are the physical findings and limitations of the patients who had a brachial plexus birth injury now that they are ready to embark into adulthood, or are well into adulthood. How does this impact their life and their ability to cope.

Methods include questionnaires, Range of Motion assessment, and psychological surveys to be done by the Psychology Service.

The student will not be involved in patient contact/data collection other than as an observer. Student will help with background research and data entry / organization as we gather the data.

Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students: none through this office. We have had students through the unit often, but not engaged primarily in a research project.
