Brief Description of Project:

The student will test cognitive learning and memory behavior in Down Syndrome model mice. Once deficits are established, the student will then test treatments that are expected to reverse cognitive deficits in Down Syndrome genetic models.

Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students:
2004/2005: Supervised James Kim, a Berkeley undergraduate who performed biochemistry experiments for the project on phosphorylation of glutamate receptors during learning. James recently got accepted to UTSW medical school and is a co author on a JBC manuscript in revision and on a published abstract at the Cold Spring Harbor Learning and Memory Meeting.

2006: Supervised Kendall Walters a medical student who decided to switch to the MD/PhD program after working in my lab. She is currently in graduate phase of her MD/PhD training.

2007: Supervising Mehreen Kouser a UTD Green Fellow. I anticipate that her work will lead to co authorship on a publication. She will be a SURF student here at UTSW this summer.

Various other high school level trainees during the summer-Divya Balasubramanian (now at SMU), Sai Balasubramanian (1st place winner in his category in the Texas State Science Fair), and others.

If additional, significant contributions to this work are made by summer students, then they will be included as authors as well.
