Project title: fMRI Detection of Deception 2006 UTSW
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): 102006-050
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): N/A
Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research;
this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping
similar types of projects)
Human-based research
Brief Description of Project:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the areas of brain activation during
deception for healthy subjects. By using blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD)
functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during truthful statements and deceptive
statements, we hope to replicate our prior work (Kozel FA, Johnson KA, Mu Q,
Grenesko E, Laken SJ, and George MS. Detecting Deception using Functional MRI.
Biological Psychiatry. 2005; 58(8):605-613) that accurately (90%) identified
when subjects were lying and found differences in brain region activation for
the group analysis.
The student will assist in recruitment of subjects, screening of subjects, scanning of subjects, and be exposed to fMRI data analysis. This will give the student exposure to the basic elements of imaging research. If the student desires, he/she can potentially start their own side project.
In addition, the student will be exposed to other imaging and brain stimulation protocols presently going on in the lab.
