Project title: Improving Prescribing Behavior in Physicians Who Care for Hypertensive
African American Men
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): 082006-051

Patient-based research
Brief Description of Project:
The purpose of this study to develop and test the effectiveness of a novel behavior theory-based intervention to overcome key informational and motivational barriers to managing hypertension among physicians who treat hypertensive African American men.
The proposed study design employs a step-wise approach to develop and test a tailored intervention to change how physicians prescribe medications to patients with hypertension in two phases: 1) a pilot phase in which we will develop, test and refine a video-based intervention, and 2) a randomized trial of the intervention in physicians who care for Black men. The intervention is anchored by a physician training video we are currently developing that addresses informational and motivational barriers to antihypertensive prescribing including lack of knowledge of the number of antihypertensive classes needed to control hypertension in high risk Black men, an d low expectations of therapeutic success in treating Black men with hypertension. *
