Project title: THR in Patients with HIV infection. A retrospective review of
consecutive series of primary total hip replacements done in patients with HIV
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): IRB# 042006-038
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):
Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects) Patient-based
Brief Description of Project:
This is a retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent total hip replacement for femoral head osteonecrosis under the care of a single surgeon in the 1990's. We have identified the patient group. There are approximately 25 patients with 30 hips. We will be reviewing the medical records and clinic charts for data analysis. The principle aim of this project is to determine the clinical outcome of these patients. Moreover, we will also be focused upon the complications in this very special patient population.
Project title: Retrospective review of total hip arthroplasty after acetabular fractures
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): 122005-045
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):
Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects) patient-based Patient-based
Brief Description of Project:
This is a retrospective review of a series of patients who had sustained acetabular
fractures and were subsequently treated with total hip replacement for post-traumatic
arthritis or osteonecrosis of the femoral head. These are two common short-term
and long-term sequalae of acetabular fractures. Our aim is to obtain data to
determine the clinical and radiographic outcome in this cohort of patients.
Most importantly, we are interested in the complications of this type of complex
surgery: infection, nerve palsy, dislocation, fractures, heterotopic ossification
around the joint, etc.
We have currently identified close to 100 such patients since 1990. We have already done data review on approximately 30 hips that have had more than 5 years of follow-up time.
Previous Research Activities or Publications with Medical Students:
I have been on faculty at 6 different medical schools: Georgetown, Yale, Johns Hopkins, Baylor, University of Kansas (Kansas City), and UT Southwestern. I have mentored several medical student projects.
At UT Southwestern:
We recently had a publication with a MS3: Bryan Choi
"Thromboembolism following total knee arthroplasty" in the Journal
of Surgical Orthopedic Advances 2007
