Project title: Effect of pioglitazone on pancreatic steatosis and bone turnover
Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): 112008-047
Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):
Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects)
Brief Description of Project: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the effect of pioglitazone 45 mg daily for 1 year on beta-cell function, insulin resistance, pancreatic and hepatic fat content, bone turnover markers, bone mineral density, bone marrow fat content, body fat distribution. To measure these outcomes we use the following tests: frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test, magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, DEXA scan, clinical evaluation.
