Medical Student Research Fellowship for Summer 2011

All descriptions must contain enough detail to permit an assessment of the problem that is to be addressed and the methodologies that are to be employed. Please be careful to outline the role that the student will play in the project that is described. Please ensure that all relevant approval numbers (IRB, IACUC) are provided.

Project title: Outcome of total hip replacement revision surgery

Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable): #062007-087 (expiration Apr 22, 2011, renewal application in process)

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):

Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects)

Patient-based

Brief Description of Project:

This is an ongoing prospective clinical study. We have included all the patients undergoing revision total hip replacement surgeries since January 2004. All the operations were done by a single surgeon: Dr. Michael Huo. Majority of the cases have been done (>90%) at UT Southwestern St Paul University Hospital, with the remaining done at Parkland Hospital.

We have generated an abstract and manuscript on
“Revision THR in the geriatric patients: is it the same as for younger patients?”

This large data base includes nearly 500 patients. Various projects for data analysis are ongoing:

  1. Management of dislocation
  2. Cost analysis of revision THR
  3. Infection

Moreover, we will start a new data base for revision TKRs as the volume for such operation has continued to escalate.
