Project title:
Comparison and validation of platelet reactivity using the VerifyNow POC test versus whole blood aggregometry

Human subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):

Animal subjects IRB approved project number (where applicable):

Project Type (patient-based research, animal-based research, or basic research; this characterization is only to permit a general classification for grouping similar types of projects)

Patient-based research

Brief Description of Project:

Platelet reactivity levels have been to affect short-term as well as long-term outcomes in patients with cardiovascular disease undergoing coronary revascularization for ischemic heart disease. VerifyNow is a recently available point-of-care assay that can measure platelet reactivity and provides substantial convenience to providers. Comparison however with our gold standard using whole blood light transmittance aggregometry is lacking. We propose to compare the assays in at least 25 patients undergoing cardiac catheterization at Parkland hospital. Data collection is expected to begin in early June and run for at least 6 weeks. The participating student will be responsible for data gathering, analysis, interpretation and publication
