Patient-based research

Brief Description of Project:

Our group has been highly active in studies focused on chronic liver disease. These studies range from retrospective database studies (we have a dedicated database that contains 1208 patients admitted to Parkland Memorial Hospital with a diagnosis of cirrhosis. We have also begun working the development on a chronic liver disease study unit. This will provide a structure to perform prospective randomized controlled trials. Topics that have been analyzed retrospectively include the outcomes in patients admitted with hepatic encephalopathy, the outcomes of patients with variceal hemorrhage over time, hepatorenal syndrome, our experience with prophylactic therapy in patients with esophageal varices, and many others. Our group has generated over 10 abstracts in this area in 2007 and 2008.
