University Of Texas Southwestern Undergraduate Medical Research Fellows Program (UT-SUMR)

This program is intended to identify and develop promising student researchers who intend to pursue careers in medicine and research, but who may not pursue formal graduate education (i.e. may not pursue Ph.D. doctoral training).

If you are only interested in obtaining the Ph.D. degree or if you intend to apply to M.D., Ph.D. programs, you should be applying to the SURF program.

Students will be placed with mentors to work on specific projects under the supervision of the mentor and fellows in the mentor's laboratory.

A stipend of $ 3000 will be provided for a ten-week fellowship period. The period of the fellowship overlaps with programs supporting medical student research. In 2004, students will be appointed from June 1-August 6. Students are permitted to take a week off during the ten-week period (the timing of this is to be decided after consultation with the mentor).

Texas residency is required.

Preference will be given to students who have completed course work that would prepare them to conduct laboratory research.

Participants that demonstrate exceptional potential during their participation in this program will be eligible to reapply in subsequent summers.
