The 47th Annual Medical Student Research Forum will be held January 20, 2009. Eight abstracts will be chosen for oral presentations. All students submitting abstracts are invited to present posters at the poster session and reception that will be held following the Forum in the Faculty Club. Cash awards will be presented for outstanding oral and poster presentations.
Abstracts must be submitted electronically. The title, authors, affiliations, and text of the abstract must fit in an area ~4.5 X 7 inches (the area outlined by the box in the linked form). The font should be 10 point Arial. The abstract form for the 47th Annual Research Forum can be downloaded as a Word document here. The deadline for the receipt of abstracts will be 5 PM on November 17, 2008. If submitted electronically, the abstract should be e-mailed to patricia.strackbein@utsouthwestern.edu. In addition, a signed copy of the abstract must be submitted to Dr. McPhaul's office.
PLEASE NOTE: To copy and paste your abstract onto the absract form, you should place a text box of the size that corresponds to the box on the abstract form, then paste the text. The text box icon can be found on the 'drawing toolbar' in Microsoft Word. Please note that the text in the document should be supplied as text in Word, not as a picture and not as a pdf file.
This year, submissions should be categorized by the student and mentor into one of the following categories: 1) Clinical Research, 2) Basic Research/ Disease Models, or 3) Research Design and Methods. These categories are designed to permit a fair judging of like abstracts and posters and to permit the participation of all students conducting research.
In past years, students reporting research that derived from their participation in year-long programs (such as the Doris Duke Clinical Reseach Fellowship, HHMI, Sarnoff, Fulbright) were not eligible to compete for oral session presentations. Beginning with the 2005 UT Southwestern Annual Medical Student Research Forum (held January 2005), abstracts from students participating in such programs were permitted to compete for a limited number of oral session presentations. This will also be true for submissions to the 2009 Forum.
