Tom Anthony MD
Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology, UTSWMC
I am a surgical oncologist, epidemiologist, and Chief of Surgical Services at
the Dallas VAMC. I am also an Associate Professor in the Division of Surgical
Oncology at UTSWMC. Although my major research focus is in clinical and patient-centered
outcomes for patients with gastrointestinal malignancy, I have also partnered
with vascular and general surgeons to extend the observations that I have made
in gastrointestinal oncology to these areas. I am also developing a clinical
research program designed to study of medical errors in surgical intensive care
units. This program is the focus of my current Doris Duke Fellow, Charles Bruen.
I believe that my clinical research group has excellent training opportunities
available for a Doris Duke Fellow. During the course of the Doris Duke Fellowship
a student would be expected to participate in one or more ongoing clinical projects
as well as executing his/her own clinical project. From these experiences participants
will gain experience in clinical trial design, conduct, analysis, and reporting.
Working on these projects will provide a broad exposure to clinical trials,
outcome studies, and general and vascular surgery in an academic environment
renown for training excellent surgeons.
Sample ongoing projects include:
1. Measurement of Health-related Quality of Life in Patients with Gastrointestinal
Malignancy.
2. Long-term Quality of Life after Peripheral Arterial Interventions.
3. Developing and Implementation of Quality Indicators for Colorectal Cancer
Surgery.
4. Rational Follow-up Strategies for Patients with Colorectal Cancer after Completion
of Initial Therapy.
5. Comparison of Medication Errors in the Cardiothoracic and Surgical Intensive
Care Units using Computerized Order Entry Versus Paper Orders.
