Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program

The WHCNPP is a certificate-advanced practice-nursing program with options for completing a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). The Program consists of a 16-week didactic portion followed by a five and one-half month (24 weeks) preceptorship. The program is divided into approximately 300 hours of didactic instruction, 300 hours of faculty-supervised clinical experience, and 480 hours of faculty-monitored, preceptor-supervised clinical experience. The program focus is on health care for women throughout the lifespan and emphasizes health promotion as well as diagnosis and management of health conditions.

Closely integrated with didactic instruction is the clinical component of the program. Students spend approximately 20 hours per week in various clinical settings, including county-wide family planning and prenatal clinics, a county health department STD clinic, labor and delivery triage, and various other specialty clinics at Parkland Health and Hospital System.

In 2007, requirements to practice as a nurse practitioner in the State of Texas will change.  Effective January 1, 2007, a master’s degree will be required to practice as a nurse practitioner.  Due to this change, the Women’s Health Education Program will be offering three more classes with the current 16 week format followed by the 5 ½ month preceptorship.
