The flies are exposed to vaporized alcohol in clear plastic tubes (right), or boxes (below). For the duration of the exposure, about 20 minutes, they are filmed with a digital video camera, and a computer then analyzes their behavior.
Visual inspection also allows us to score the percentage of sedated flies, as a function of the duration of alcohol exposure.
Together this gives us a quantitative picture of alcohol-induced hyperactivation, and alcohol-induced sedation.
